Murderer ordered to pay compensation in installments

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Dec. 4 ordered Mitsuko Yamada (file photo) who murdered a 2-year-old girl to pay the victim's parents 61 million yen in compensation, of which 19.8 million yen is to be paid in installments over 20 years. In November, the Tokyo High Court sentenced Yamada to 15 years in prison for strangling Haruna Wakayama on Nov. 22, 1999, in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward and burying her body in the backyard of Yamada's parents' home in the town of Oigawa, Shizuoka Prefecture. Pakistani journalist Shahid-ur-Rehman dies at 74

Renowned Pakistani journalist Shahid-ur-Rehman, seen in this photo taken on Nov. 9, 2019, in Kartarpur, Pakistan, died of a heart attack at a hospital in Islamabad on April 15, 2020, at age 74. Rehman, who was also a long-time stringer correspondent for Kyodo News, authored several books, including "Long Road To Chagai," a 1999 book about Pakistan's nuclear program based on interviews with disgraced nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan and others.
